Qualities of Life

In this dynamic lesson, students practiced expressing personal opinions across different levels of formality through interactive role-play and meaningful discussions about life priorities. While enhancing their speaking skills and gaining confidence with tailored input, students worked collaboratively in a reading activity by doing an information-gap activity. This lesson is a mix of teamwork, critical thinking, and fun!

Theme: Qualities of Life

Goal:

  • Develop abilities to convey personal opinions effectively across different registers, using appropriate formulaic expressions for formal and informal contexts.

  • Enhance skills in capturing main ideas and detailed information from readings about Melbourne and Sydney by comparing and contrasting.
     

Objectives (SWBAT):

   Students Will Be Able To ...

  • convey personal opinions with formulaic expressions of various formalities in different registers.

    • Knowing:

      • Discourse knowledge: identify what expressions would be suitable in different registers (i.e., formal and informal contexts)

    • Doing:

      • Speech function: provide reasons to justify one’s decision and express agreements & disagreements in conversations

      • Interaction management: initiate, maintain, and end conversations

    • Strategizing: 

      • Cognitive strategies: use the provided formulaic expressions to conduct conversations within different contexts

      • Metacognitive strategies: self-evaluate their speaking confidence and skills before and after the activity
        peer-evaluation

  • compare and contrast key aspects of Melbourne and Sydney in readings by completing an information-gap activity.

Activity 1

Speaking: ROLE-PLAY -- Qualities of Life

  • Students share their ranking of different aspects of life.

  • Role-play: Students share the priorities of different aspects based on the perspectives of their assigned roles.

  • Meaningful and authentic conversation input

  • Students learn how to express opinions across various registers and levels of formalities.

Activity 2

Reading - Sydney vs. Melbourne

  • Students do an information-gap activity by comparing and contrasting Sydney and Melbourne with assigned readings.
