My Dating Profile

Level: Upper-Intermediate 1        Date/Time: Wednesday, Sep. 25th, 2024

In this fun and engaging lesson, students explored adjectives to describe personalities through a creative 'dating' activity! By crafting their own identities and searching for 'matches,' they practiced fluency and accuracy in a meaningful, interactive way. With three rounds of practice and incremental authentic input, students gained confidence and improved their language skills while having a great time connecting with classmates!

Theme: My Dating Profile

Goal:

  • Describe their own and others’ personalities by using personality adjectives with concrete examples

  • Identify different verb forms (i.e., gerunds and infinitives) followed by specific verbs, such as enjoy, avoid, pretend, expect, etc. 
     

Objectives (SWBAT):

   Students Will Be Able To ...

  • Talk about personal traits and ask questions about traits shared between speakers

  • Determine when to use the gerund form after certain verbs and produce meaningful expressions that contain gerunds and prepositions together.

  • Conduct conversations with formulaic expressions in a dating scenario using their made-up identities. 

    • ​Knowing:

      • Discourse knowledge - Identify what topics/subjects and word use would be suitable for dating scenarios

    • Doing:

      • Interaction management - Being able to initiate, maintain (i.e., offer turns), and end conversations 

    • Strategizing:     

      • Cognitive strategies - Use the provided formulaic expressions to conduct conversations within a specific context

      • Metacognitive strategies - Self-evaluate their speaking confidence and skills before and after the activity

  • Students  learn gerund and infinitive verbs through drawing and making sentences.

Speaking -- My Dating Profile

  • Students learn how to initiate, maintain, and end the conversation fluently through an interesting, engaging, and meaningful "dating activity."
